While Texas Longhorn cattle can be a bit intimidating until they get to know you and trust you, they can be gentle giants as well. The Texas Longhorn today carries many colors and hide patterns. Given a favorable grazing range and an opportunity to eat freely, they lose that old stigma of being short on beef.
They are very well suited to the conditions of the Southwest where for over three centuries they have occupied extensive ranges and have left a stamp on the economy and culture of the region. Most people do not realize how long the Texas Longhorns have been in New Mexico, long before the famous Goodnight-Loving Trail that leads up into Colorado.
Today, a small dedicated group of breeders known as the Texas Longhorn Breeders of New Mexico works to preserve the breed in New Mexico and educate the public on the many positive traits of this magnificent breed of beef cattle.
